The Progressive Choice for Mayor

As a City Council Member, Kathie Tovo fought for the working families of Austin. She championed reproductive rights and policies that support women and working families: pay equity and paid sick leave, afterschool programs, childcare, affordable housing, and increases to the city's living wage.

She stood with everyday Austinites and policies that benefit all Austin, not just those who want to use the City to make a profit.

No other candidate in this race has the experience she has at City Hall.

As Mayor, she will continue to fight for progressive values: equity, transparent government, and community-led policy. We can count on her to continue standing up for women, workers, immigrants and our LGBTQIA+ community—and standing strong against the Ted Cruz/Gov. Abbott attacks on our local freedoms and bodily autonomy.

AFFORDABILITY

Austin faces a widening wealth gap, and families are finding  it harder to stay. Kathie has a strong track record of supporting working families, from pushing back on electricity rate increases and unnecessary city expenditures to supporting investments in childcare and transit that help lower families' costs.

As Mayor, she will work to:

  • Lower utility costs and fees

  • Cut unnecessary spending

  • Increase access to quality affordable childcare

  • Ensure that city jobs pay living wages and provide good benefits

  • Expand workforce training

  • Support musicians and artists

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

We need to ensure that families who desire to grow in their neighborhoods have the opportunity to experience housing stability and the right to stay and create generational wealth.

As Mayor, she will work to:

  • Expand tenant protections

  • Build affordable housing on city-owned land, such as 1215 Red River St.

  • Craft plans with area colleges and universities to facilitate their creation of student housing

  • Expand investments in home repair and low income loan programs, such as the one Kathie initiated that has stalled

  • Preserve existing affordable housing

  • Deploy anti-displacement strategies

  • Partner with the private sector and others to increase their investments in ending homelessness

CLIMATE RESILIENCE

A more sustainable, resilient Austin in the face of climate change.

Kathie recognizes that climate shocks will occur with greater frequency and intensity, and that we must continue creating innovative plans that foster community preparedness to save lives and reduce recovery costs. As a Council Member, she initiated "Water Forward," the100-year water planning effort, the creation of resilience hubs, and she led and supported multiple environmental initiatives.

As Mayor, she will:

  • Set up city-run resilience hubs and empower communities to set up their own

  • Support and expand FireWise initiatives

  • Implement Water Forward and the Climate Equity Plan recommendations

  • Continue past support for Project Connect, sidewalks and bicycle lane investments, and Vision Zero improvements

  • Ensure continued investments in water and electric infrastructure

COMMUNITY SAFETY

Everyone should feel safe in their home and neighborhood. Creating a safer, more resilient community starts with providing access to resources, violence prevention programs, mental health care, and programs like EMCOT, which Kathie helped fund, and the Sobering Center, which she led in creating.

As Mayor she will support:

  • Fully-staffed police force and 911 center

  • Multi-year police contract with voter-approved accountability measures

  • Continued improvements to police cadet training curriculum

  • The mental health diversion pilot program

  • Continued investments in violence prevention

  • Implementing the now-stalled recommendations in her Safer 6th St. initiative
